Welcome to the Expedition Psychology Website!
The site was originally associated with the book Extreme: Why Some People Thrive at the Limits, by Emma Barrett and Paul Martin (published in 2014 by OUP). Emma has joined forces with Dr Nathan Smith to develop the site into a one-stop resource for behavioural and social science research on extreme and challenging environments.
Professor Emma Barrett
Emma is Professor of Psychology, Security and Trust at the University of Manchester. She holds a PhD in forensic psychology from the University of Birmingham. Her career includes more than a decade leading a research team conducting and communicating psychological and criminological research for a range of law enforcement and other public sector customers, and she runs Psychology and Crime News and the Deception Blog. However, she also studies a more positive side of extreme behaviour: how and why people survive and thrive in harsh and extreme environments. Emma is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
